23 Marvel Updates from D23

Streaming Series

Armor Wars

Don Cheadle returns as James Rhodes in the upcoming series Armor Wars. Based on the comic arc, but also incorporating the loss of Tony Stark during Endgame, James Rhodes, aka War Machine, has to deal with the misuse of Stark’s weaponry after it falls into the wrong hands.

Daredevil: Born Again

Turns out, if fans make enough noise, Marvel will listen. D23 saw the official title announcement of the Daredevil Disney+ Series as Daredevil: Born Again. While no plot details were announced, it was officially confirmed that Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are reprising their roles from the Netflix and previous MCU outings as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Kingpin in the series. Frank Miller’s Born Again arc served as a loose basis for the third season of the Netflix series, so it’ll be interesting to see how it feeds into this series when it debuts in spring 2024.

Echo

Vincent D’Onofrio had returned to his role as Kingpin in Hawkeye before Daredevil was confirmed, and that show also set up another of Disney’s streaming Marvel Series with Echo. This new series shows Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez dealing with the repercussions of her actions and discoveries in Hawkeye as she rediscovers her roots and forges familial connections. Echo is scheduled to stream in Summer 2023.

Ironheart

After a release date was announced as Fall 2023 during San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel announced a quick snippet of casting news for Ironheart, where they confirmed Hamilton Actor Anthony Ramos would return to Disney+ as the Hood, a member of an underground criminal syndicate.

Loki Season 2

Also announcing a new member of the cast is the second season of Loki. Following in the MCU footsteps of his Everywhere All at Once co-star, Ke Huy Quan is joining the cast in an undisclosed role for Loki season 2. He’ll either be the big bad, or he’ll be a member of the TVA that believes Loki, who has now found himself in a reality where Morbius and Agent B-15 don’t know him. Loki resumes in Summer 2023.

Secret Invasion

Marvel’s known for their massive crossover events, and this one has had fans eagerly awaiting news since it was confirmed in 2020. But D23 dropped the first public trailer for the series, set to premiere in spring 2023.

Werewolf by Night

Finally, the next Marvel streaming project to debut will be Werewolf By Night, an homage to classic monster movies in a project Kevin Feige is calling “Fun-Scary”. My favorite part of the trailer is the terrible puns. Werewolf by Night releases on October 6th and a special issue of “What to Watch” will be released with my thoughts and feelings about the show for the month-long Pages and Panels Halloween celebration The Long Halloween.

Marvel Studios Films

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, and Jonathan Majors joined Feige on stage at D23 to discuss and preview the sequel to Ant-Man and the Wasp. The Lang/ van Dyne gang’s face-off with Kang is kicking off Phase Five of the MCU, the mid-section of the Multiverse Saga on February 17th, 2023.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

November 11th marks a bittersweet return to Wakanda for fans of 2018’s Black Panther. While there’s a ton of excitement surrounding the sequel, it’s hard to really imagine how to move forward with the storytelling without Chadwick Boseman. D23’s panel offered a longer look at the film and discussion from the film’s stars including Angela Basset, Tenoch Huerta, Winston Duke, and Letitia Wright, plus director Ryan Cooger. They all spoke of the responsibility they felt to carry on Boseman’s legacy after his unexpected passing, with Basset saying “Chadwick was with us every step of the way, he paved the way. We had to meet his level of excellence.” I loved the original film, and I’m so excited (and devastated) to see Wakanda Forever and the closure it will offer for the fans still mourning the star.

Captain America: New World Order

Sam Wilson’s finally headlining as our Captain America! Captain America: New World Order reunites Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson with several of his The Falcon and The Winter Soldier castmates including Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley and Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres. However, it also marks the return of Tim Blake Nelson, who played Dr. Samuel Stern in The Incredible Hulk, teasing The Leader as the film’s big bad.

Fantastic Four

While fans were clamoring for confirmation that fan-favorite Jon Krasinki would be reprising his role as the Flying Spaghetti Monster Mr. Fantastic, it didn’t come. However, it was announced that WandaVision director Marc Shakman would be directing the rebooted Fantastic Four film!

The Marvels

Some people may complain about Marvel’s female representation in the MCU, but if The Marvels panel at D23 did anything, it made me more excited about the film. Having gotten to see Monica in WandaVision was great, but as a younger female fan, watching Iman Vellani living out her Kamala Khan Avengers-con destiny was priceless. The Marvels will reunite these heroines when it’s released on July 28th, 2023- and finally, explain that Ms. Marvel post-credits scene!

Thunderbolts

While Bucky isn’t teaming up with Sam in New World Order, he’s also getting his moment in the spotlight- although he has to share it. Casting was announced for Thunderbolts, the Valentina Allegra de La Fountaine-led-led group of renegade anti-heroes. With previous MCU actors reprising their roles, Thunderbolts seems poised to try and change public opinion about Wyatt Russel’s US Agent John Walker by teaming him up with fan-favorite characters Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/ Winter Soldier, the criminally underutilized Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost and Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. However, the comics Thunderbolts team was headed up by the conspicuously absent Baron Zemo… Fingers crossed he’ll make a surprise cameo at least when the film is finally released!

Games

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Midnight Suns dropped a new gameplay trailer and announced a series of short videos explaining how the characters in the game found themselves in this position. The first video launches October 31st, and leads up to the game launch on December 2nd for Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, expanding to additional gaming platforms at a later date. Midnight Suns is available for pre-order now and is offering an exclusive Dr. Strange Defender skin with pre-order.

SkyDance New Media

Marvel is revisiting the 1940’s Captain America in their new as-yet-to-be-titled game. It focuses on Steve Rodgers, Azzuri, the grandfather of T’Challa and the WWII-era Black Panther; Gabriel Jones, a member of the Howling Commandos; and Nanali, leader of the early Wakandan Spy Network. World War II forces their worlds to intersect in an original storyline inspired and influenced by both the comics’ canon history and the MCU’s canon.

Marvel Snap

In what I feel is an interesting naming choice post-Infinity Saga, Marvel Snap is a digital card game reminiscent of Pokémon and Magic The Gathering, but on your phone or computer. Early registration is available now, and the game launches on October 18th.

Marvel Strike Force

Of course, Marvel’s established Micro-transaction game wouldn’t be left out of the D23 excitement. Red Hulk joined the line-up in Marvel Strike Force as one of the Horseman of War just after D23 ended, marking his entry into the game’s line-up of baddies.

Marvel World of Heroes

Lastly from the games news, Marvel and Pokémon Go developer Niantic are teaming up to use augmented reality programs on your smartphone so fans can develop their own heroic personas and team up with iconic Marvel Characters to fight evil in 2023.

Merchandise Collections

60 Years of Spider-Man

Besides the panel and the Comic-Con museum exhibit, the 60th anniversary of Spider-Man continues with new merchandise. With a little something for everyone, there are spirit jerseys, sweatpants, and even a matching bag.

Black Panther D23 Collection Merch

As Black Panther: Wakanda Forever approaches, the merchandise continues to roll out. I’m obsessed with the Shuri Designer Doll and this gorgeous top that I’ll be wearing to see the movie on opening night.

X-Men D23 Collection Merch

Also released was a handful of collectible X-Men merchandise. As fans are still eagerly awaiting the return of the animated series and reliving the MCU debut of Professor X in Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the release of this collection of Pins seems especially timely.
