Weekly Wrap-Up: Week Ending September 2nd, 2022

Note: Just so you know, Pages and Panels may receive a portion of proceeds from our Amazon affiliate links. However, we also highly recommend shopping from independent comic shops. They’re a massive part of the comics community. Find your local shops here.

It seems like I’m not the only one having an off week when it comes to big news in comics. Both Valiant and Webtoons didn’t have any major news coming out this week. Of course, they both still have plenty of previous products to check out if you’re missing their features in this week’s wrap-up! However, there was plenty of news from some of the industry’s other major publication players. Plus, Pages and Panels is offering our first-ever contest!

Archie Comics celebrated 60 years of everyone’s favorite teenage witch with a special collection of the very best of Sabrina Spellman stories over the last six decades. While this over 500 page collection is available now from the Archie Comics site, it’s still listed as pre-order on Amazon.

Archie Comics is also offering a Labor Day sale this weekend, with 40% off bundles and subscriptions with code SLD40.

Boom! Studios announced a special one-shot story that fits into the world of Something’s Killing the Children with Book of Slaughter #1. This issue fits into both SIKTC and House of Slaughter storylines, but also dives into the mysteries of the monster-hunting Order of St. George. It’s not a surprise I’m excited because I love the Slaughterverse, so you’ll see a spotlight when this is released in December.

Coming this month from Boom! is Briar #1, which is a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale. Except this time, no one saved our sleepy princess. Now she has to save herself in a post-apocalyptic fairy tale world. Again, I’m here for it.

Finally, Boom! offered a deeper look into the upcoming Queer YA Graphic Novel Hollow, from the creative team behind Lumberjanes. Confession: I’m absolutely TERRIFIED of the Headless Horseman, which is the legend that this graphic novel is based around. Which means that Pages and Panels is going to need one of you to read it and write a review of it.

To enter, follow and leave a comment on the Hollow post on Pages and Panels’s Instagram with why you’d be a great choice to review this title. The winner will receive a copy of Hollow at the end of September once the title is released in comic shops and will have their review posted on the site as part of The Long Halloween features we’ll be posting throughout the month of October. Only open to Residents of the Continental USA.

Dark Horse announced that they’d be returning to the world of Bryan Talbot’s cosmic multiversal traveler Luther Arkwright in a new graphic novel titled The Legend of Luther Arkwright. This adult science fiction OGN deals with dystopian and utopian ideals as the main character breaks through what the limits of reality are and could be. Legend of Luther Arkwright is available for preorder now.

DC surprised a lot of people this week by announcing there will be no Fandome 2022, since in-person events are returning. In the coming weeks, I’ll be taking a look at conventions and writing more about this decision and how I feel it reflects DC and WB’s current financial situation.

DC has now entered into a third distribution partnership. This time, distribution company Universal Distribution has signed on with a global agreement, joining Diamond UK, Lunar Distribution, and Penguin Random House in providing retailers with DC Comics and Graphic Novels.

Returning to the heyday of Bat-films and prepping for the upcoming Batman Day, the first collected volume of Batman ’89 was released this week. Featuring the first six issues, this title resists the world of the 1989 Batman film from Tim Burton starring Micheal Keaton. While we won’t be getting to see him grace our screens with Leslie Grace, this title returns to the world of his Batman and goes beyond what we saw in the film. This title is now available at local retailers or online.

Along with their November Solicitations, Image Comics announced that two of their comics would be receiving hardcover collections this winter. One is Killadelphia, which turns the city of brotherly love into the city of Bloody love when one cop faces off against an army of vampires, led by John Adams. The other is Bitter Root, which deals with issues of hate and racism. Both will be available at a variety of places, including the linked pre-orders on Amazon, and local comic shops.

They also announced a new spy thriller title releasing in December called Too Dead to Die. This title seems like a great fit for anyone who loves James Bond or wonders what happens to spies after they leave a life of mystery.

The two-year anniversary of the passing of Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman was this past week. Marvel announced two new publications featuring Black Panther.

One is Black Panther: Uprising, the third novel in the Young Prince middle-grade series that follows T’Challa as a younger teenager facing mystic evils and middle-grade issues.

The other is a collection of essays that highlights the importance Black Panther has had on the Black community since its release. Featuring interviews and essays about the film, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther : Dreams of Wakanda covers everything from costume design to music to the science behind Wakanda.
