The Funnies: Five TV Comic Moments That Live In My Brain Rent-Free

If you were around last Halloween, you’ll know that my love of comics translates into a love for comic book television, even if it rots my brain a bit. But there are a few comic television moments that hold a special place in my mind.

“People Like Us”

Doom Parol

If you’ve never seen Doom Patrol, you’re missing out. It’s crass, dirty, snarky, smart, but also very empathetic, full of feeling, and deals with some really heavy themes of self-worth, representation, and identity. It’s certainly not a kids’s show, but a fabulous adult take on a group of misfits banding together to be heroes- and a family.

Season One, Episode Eight introduces Danny The Street, a very metaphysical, sentient, genderqueer street. Yes, a street. Danny and Negative Man (played by Matthew Zuk and Matt Boomer) end up having a wild karaoke session in a daydream. Boomer gets the chance to show off his musical prowess in a fun high-energy cover of Kelly Clarkson’s People Like Us. The song has a wicked knack for getting stuck in my head.

“Titans are Back, Bitches!”

Titans

Titans is, at times, is like chain-restaurant pizza. Sometimes, it’s killer good. Most times, it’s a little lackluster. However, it’s one of those things where I’m so thrilled to have some Dick Grayson representation, that it doesn’t need to be really good for me to thoroughly enjoy it. I will say, since switching to HBO Max, the quality of the show has definitely improved.

This particular scene is from the second season, so it’s a little cheesy. But Curran Walters yelling “Titans are back, bitches!” is a phrase that goes through my brain at least four times a week. I want it on a tee shirt, honestly.

“Float Like A Butterfly”

Moon Knight

I loved Moon Knight. My favorite aspect of the show was the balance between Oscar Isaac’s dramatic and comedic sides. He has such an incredible gift of embodying a character and making them feel very different. Moon Knight really highlighted that.

Isaac embraces the comedic side of the character’s personality with Steven Grant. He’s got an impeccable sense of timing that makes Grant’s first outing as Mr. Knight an absolute hoot. When he sings his little song to pump him up to fight the scary wolf thing, it’s an absolute inspiration to get my energy going too.

“I Made Macaroni”

Hawkeye

In another of the MCU’s phase four’s streaming series, Yelena’s appearance in Hawkeye makes the list. Her delivery of the greeting and offer of food is just so entertaining. I’m not a big macaroni and cheese person, but every time I make any kind of noodles, my brain now goes “I made macaroni, you want some?”

“Some Days You Just Can’t Get Rid of a Bomb”

Batman 1966

The most famous of my rent-free noggin tenants is Adam West and this iconic bat-moment. The 1966 series was so campy and goofy. I’m an anxious worrier and whenever I feel like I’m doing something very badly, I just sigh and think “Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb.”

(Spoiler alert: I’m the bomb. sometimes in that “Woo!” aspect, others in that “life implosion” aspect.)
