The Primer #2- Brand Identity

When it comes to the manufacturing of comic books, few features are as identifiable as their publisher branding. In fact, these branding are almost used in a sense like the terms “Lego” or “Kleenex”. The big two’s identities are tied to all the products not just their own.

The Big Two

This phrase refers to the two most recognizable names in the comic industry- Marvel Comics and DC Comics. Some people assume that all comics are printed under the Marvel or DC brand identities, which causes them to overlook other companies.

DC

DC Comics was founded in 1934 as National Allied Publications. They eventually took the initials DC from their tentpole series Detective Comics, which featured Batman. They also released another title called Action Comics, which featured Superman.

Warner Brothers Discovery

The name given to media conglomerate Warner Brothers in the wake of their April 2022 merger with Discovery. WBD is now the media head for DC’s film and television adaptations.

Marvel

Originally Atlas Comics, then Timely Comics, Marvel found its footing with the help of comics legend Stan Lee, who is most frequently associated with the brand.

Marvel Entertainment

Marvel Entertainment was formed in 1993, and is headed by Kevin Feige. This company oversees all of Marvel’s offerings from theme parks to publishing to films.

Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios is a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios. They are responsible for the MCU’s offerings on film and television. They reported to Marvel Entertainment before The Walt Disney Corporation bought out the company.

Indie Comics

Indie Comic brands are publishers that don’t fall under Marvel or DC. Some of these are pretty massive corporations but don’t have the brand recognition of Marvel or DC.
