I recently was granted the opportunity to read the first two issues of an indie title called Magic Powder, thanks to Jeffery Schiller. Schiller is responsible for the story and conceptualization of the series, with a creative team that includes Daniele Aquilani, Samuel Iwunze, Matt Harding, and Raven Schiller.
For this review, I received the first two issues of Magic Powder, as well as supplemental character descriptions, presented in a confidential file format, titled The Thesz Report. These supplemental files are available separately from the issues, but in my opinion, are very much needed to grasp the wide and detailed background of the characters. I would have liked to have had them intermingled with the book, much like how the last page of each issue lists the deceased of the issue.
The plot focuses on a mob-style hierarchy based around fairy tale creatures and the trafficking of “Magic Powder”, the recreational name for fairy dust in Thesz. Magic Powder has exactly the kind of premise I adore. I’m a sucker for any kind of a dark fairy tale twist, and the combination of fairy tale creatures and the Mob is right up my alley. The combination of magical elements and the underlying sociopolitical structure of the comic’s society is an absolute high point of the comic. The art is just brutal and bloody enough without feeling like gratuitous gore.
I’m very much looking forward to further issues of Magic Powder and will be supporting Magic Powder #3’s Kickstarter as soon as it launches. Issues #1 and #2 and The Thesz Reports are available for purchase at getmagicpowder.com
