Wrap-Up: Week Ending October 22nd, 2021

After a few weeks off, we’re jumping back into the big news from Marvel and DC for the week ending October 22nd!

Marvel:

This week, Marvel had some big announcements on the publishing end of things. Feeding the hype for the upcoming Disney+ series She Hulk (Starring Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters and The Good Place’s Jameela Jamil), Marvel announced a new series lead by Rainbow Rowell and Rogê Antônio. Rowell wrote previously for Runaways, so even though I’m super bummed that run’s over, I think it’s a solid transition into She Hulk. The new title debuts in January 2022, with the streaming series hitting the platform later in 2022.

If you’re less of a holidays person and more of a spooky season person, Marvel still has your back. Dropping on Tuesday, exclusively on the Marvel Unlimited app, is a new series called Spine-Tingling Spider-Man. Designed for vertical scrolling on phones and tablets, this new series written by Saladin Ahmed with art from Juan Ferreyra features Peter Parker facing off with a villain who gets into his head. To get you in the spooky vibes to read the first issue on Tuesday, Marvel released the official theme song for Spine-Tingling Spider-Man. It’s a fantastically creepy nursery rhyme styled song with haunting piano. I’d personally compare it to DC’s Court of Owls rhyme, and if you know me, you know that’s a huge compliment.  Feel free to check it out, but I’m going to turn off the music before I get more nightmares. Keep an eye out for a review of Spine-Tingling Spider-Man next week with a special Halloween Pages post.

Speaking of Spidey, today Marvel Studios released a cover of Empire magazine featuring Tom Holland’s web slinging superhero in his new black-and-red suit. He’s surrounded by splintered pieces of the multiverse including one of Doc Ock’s legs and Green Goblin’s bombs. Both the issue and the film will be released in December, making them the next big Marvel release after The Eternals

The Eternals premieres in theaters November 5th, but had the world premiere and red carpet this week. Already, the film has been struck by a bit of drama. First and foremost, the rest of the film’s press this week has been switched to virtual after an apparent Covid exposure happened at the red carpet. Several ladies in the film, including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Lauren Ridloff, and director Chloé Zhao were scheduled to appear at the Elle “Women in Hollywood” event, but quarantined in an abundance of caution. Then someone leaked massive spoilers for the post credits scene. That leak was then picked up and carried by major news organizations, several of whom posted the spoiler in article titles, making it incredibly difficult to avoid. I’ve seen some of the title spoilers, but have worked really hard to avoid them. So remember- Thanos demands silence, y’all. Even if Thanos isn’t the thing anymore.

DC:

I don’t have the energy to handle all the massive announcements that came out of DC Fandome last Saturday, but you can check out my thoughts on it here. This year’s Fandome had triple the audience traffic and trended at #1 on Twitter for eight hours.

On the TV end of things, DC wrapped up this season of Titans with a finale episode titled “Purple Rain” on HBOMax. The episode brought to a close the “Scarecrow/Red Hood” storyline, but certainly set up a possible future for a Red Hood spin-off series as rumored. The lack of announcement for the was noticeable at FanDome, but there was also no mention of the previously announced Green Lantern tv series either. I’ve heard rumors of an HBOMax focused event similar to Fandome happening early next year, and if that’s true, I’d put money on Curran Walters taking Hood on a trip with the Outsiders. But if you’ve seen the finale episode, they also named-dropped the last of Red Hood’s Outsider team. So maybe we’ll see a certain archer during season 4, as a new season was announced during Fandome.

During Fandome, they also announced that the first two episodes of Young Justice: Phantoms were released. The fourth season of the animated series is releasing the first half of the season weekly until the end of the year before returning in spring with the 4B section of the 26 episode season. Miss Martin and Superboy are finally getting married, and things never go according to plan. The first episode has set up a lot of conversation about racism and interracial relationships, as well as the importance of faith and tradition. I’ve always been a huge fan of Young Justice, and a huge reason why is because of their willingness to tackle these subjects.

Other subjects that DC is addressing right now is the public response to Jon Kent’s coming out. Jon Kent, the son of Clark Kent, currently has the Superman mantle, but many people seem to have skipped that fact as they’ve been complaining that Superman should be with Lois Lane- who is Jon’s mom. However, even though there’s been quite a bit of backlash, sales for the first four issues of Superman: Son of Kal-El have been issued a second printing and issue 5, where Jon official comes out, has seen high preorders.

Finally, in the big world news, Wonder Woman celebrated her 80th anniversary by being introduced into the Character Hall of Fame from the upcoming Comic-Con Museum. Partnering with Dove, DC and Wonder Woman have also begun a series called “Real Wonder”, where fans can highlight women in their lives who are doing amazing things. For all the details on celebrating Wonder Woman’s big anniversary, you can check out the virtual hub here

Next week, I’ll be posting some of my favorite stories to get you in the Halloween mood, plus getting ready for The Eternals. Feel free to drop me a line letting me know what your favorite stories are, and if you’ve pre-ordered your tickets for The Eternals.
